FAQs re the Outboard Lower First Aid Kit

Q: WHY DO I NEED THIS KIT?

A:   Normal lower unit/gear case lube is around 80 to 90 wt. The grease in our kit is like warm butter and adheres to the internal gear case parts limiting or preventing water damage much better than the lighter standard gear lube.

Q:  WHAT IS IN THIS KIT?

A:   The First Aid Kit will have 1, 2. 3, or 4 (depending on your motor) 10 OZ tubes of water repellant Lubriplate NO 630-AA Grease with seals common to 3 or 4 brands of outboard lower units. If you will e-mail your motor information to tomboatshp@bellsouth.net we will help you select the correct number of tubes you would need to purchase and the FREE correct seals for your lower unit.

Q:  WHAT INFORMATION DO I NEED TO SEND TO YOU via e-mail?

A:  You need to send me the make, year, and HP of your motor.

Q:  HOW DO I KNOW HOW MANY TUBES AND SPARE TUBES TO ORDER TO MAINTAIN MY LOWER UNIT TO ORDER?

A:  You should order a spare tube if you think you won't repair your gear case leak in the near future. You will need to check your lube level every few hours of motor use.  A rule of thumb gauge:
      - 1.5 - 25 HP motors will require 1 tube, plus one spare;        -   25 HP  -  will require 2 tubes, plus a spare ;

       -   30 - 70 HP with 3 3/8th inch diameter gearcases will use 2 - 4 tubes, plus a spare to maintain.
(4 inch gear cases may take up to 4 tubes)

The diameter of your lower unit will help you determine the number of tubes of grease you will require - the cost is quite low, so don't cut yourself short.

Q:  THE INFORMATION SAID THAT I SHOULDN'T USE THIS METHOD WITH CERTAIN MOTORS, CAN YOU BE MORE SPECIFIC?

ADO NOT USE this grease with motors that have electric shift or hydrolic pumps that assist in shifting.  IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED!  The electric shift or hydrolic assist motors are mid-late 60's and early 70s Johnson and Evenrude motors.

Q:  DOES THIS KIT FIX MY GEAR CASE LEAK?

A:  "NO", "NO", "NO"  This First Aid Kit is meant to get you through a short term situation.  I do have customers that have used it for a long period of time - if your motor has some years on it, it may buy you some time, but it is not a fix.

Q:  IF I USE THIS GEAR LUBE WILL IT HARM ANY OTHER GEAR CASE OR MOTOR PARTS?

AIf you do not repair your leak or use this lube you can count on worse damage then if you do not do one or the other.  Internal gear case parts are expensive and some shops charge up to $100/hour for labor.  Remember you are using this information to treat a symptom.  You are seeking help - I have never seen harm from using this Lubriplate Grease.  I always explain the choices of proper repair or using this water repellant lube to customers so they understand that this product may buy them some time. This is not a permanent fix, but I'm sold on it!

Q:  YOU USE THE TERM "BANDAID", WHAT DO YOU MEAN?

AYour lower unit/gear case was designed to be a sealed unit with specific gear oil to prevent wear and corrosion on the gear case parts.  If you have a leak, you need a "BANDAID" to slow the bleeding, as well as cover and protect the lower unit internal parts from water damage and corrosion.

Q:  HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PUTTING THIS PRODUCT IN YOUR CUSTOMERS' GEAR CASES?

AI'm not exactly sure, but at least 25 years.

Q:  CAN YOU HELP ME LEARN HOW TO REPAIR MY BOAT LEAK?

A:   Sure,  but you need to write me a detailed e-mail re your problem tomboatshp@bellsouth.net or call me at 386-795-6590.
